No much to say on this one so I’ll keep it short and sweet. In between cruising the highlands and island of bonny Scotland in our *sweeeeet* rental car, I managed to fire off a few totally candid shots (wink) of the missis in Edinburgh…and some bonus landscapes at the end too, sure why not. Funky composition was the target, but I also wanted to address some annoying compositional errors I was making. I wasn’t composing the face correctly at all, and I was losing quite a lot of the image cropping to correct for it in post. This time I tried composing where I thought was good, then pushing it a little further. I think it’s worked and I could even push some more next time out.

En route to the Alan Law Photography workshop last weekend (which was *amazing* by the way) I had arranged with my beautiful cousin, Bethany (Beth), to spend the day together and see what amazing shots we could come up with. From the set below you may be forgiven for thinking Beth is someone bursting with confidence, well, not quite. Beth is a young woman of very few words, mainly due to many years of bullying in school, and even after all these years I am still yet to meet the real Bethany. Despite this, Beth is a keen beauty pageant entrant and can often be found on stage performing her many talents in front of hundreds of people. From this, Beth has discovered that helping others is what makes her smile and is now the local representative for “Make a Wish UK”, a charity, which has granted more than 10,000 magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions. She is often donating to the homeless with her little 6 year old nephew, Ollie, and holding charity events where the proceeds are donated to those she feels are most in need of a little help around the country.   Well I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty glad 2016 is now behind us. It’s been one weird year which shook the world of politics and saw the deaths of many much loved icons. This was the Lord Voldemort of years. If years were movies, 2016 would be “Dr. Strangelove”. If years were songs, 2016 would be “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?).” It’s not all been bad, however. Gravitational waves were detected, proving Einstein was right, a plane circumnavigated the globe without a drop of fuel and a woman called Candace Payne put on a Chewbacca mask and made the world cry with laughter. In photography terms, my year has been very productive. I bought a new camera system and started experimenting a lot more with light and composition. I even bought myself two flash units and a remote flash controller for some OCF work. I discovered multiple exposures, light painting, Lightroom presets, a better sharpening technique and Photo Mechanic for a more efficient culling process. I recently posted a plot on Facebook showing the number of images within in my “best of” set over the last few years, which was a bit of fun but also […]

Asia

Asia was one of those truly memorable trips. The sights, the smells the people all totally unforgettable. I’ve been to Asia before. Loved it. So this time the misses and I decided to tick two big destinations off our list: China and Japan. Three weeks of non-stop action, quite literally walking our socks off (minimum a half marathon *every* day). The adventure started in Hong Kong, moved to Shanghai, Xi’an, and Beijing before flying over to Tokyo and taking the Shinkansen to Kyoto. Along the way we stopped off at Luoyang, Nara and the Great Wall of China. We did the full 360 and returned to Hong Kong for a final fill of Dim Sum and sunshine. The sights throughout were incredible and the contrast between the two countries stark. Culture, mannerisms, food, noise, driving and the toilets! (I miss my heated seat!) All images in this set were taken in manual mode and AF disabled. The learning curve was steep! I endeavoured to show the people and sights of Asia in a street style storyboard, applying everything that I had learned/studied to date. I invite you to have a sneaky-peek at our unforgettable trip and, as always, I […]

Well, what a year 2015 was. We’re still reliving moments almost a year and a half later. 2015 saw our wedding followed by one of the most magical trips around the west coast of the USA. Truly amazing. It’s been an interesting exercise compiling this set as it became apparent to me, quite quickly, how my style and skill set has developed over the last few years, in particular the differences between 2015/16. My original plan was to document all years but some are just, well, terrible, so I thought I’d start with 2015 and go from there. Unfortunately though, I hadn’t realised how little I’d been out the the camera in 2015, so the majority of these are coming from our trip around California. Although I am proud of this set, I’m even more proud of how my 2016 has gone so far, and it’s far from over! Looking forward to sharing those with you early in 2017… Anyway, as always, I hope you like!

Another adventure filled trip, full of excitement and love. This time Warsaw, Poland, for a wedding. Thankfully I managed to have the camera out on a few of the days in between the Vodka’s and the Pierogi’s. I think I may have a slight addiction to the latter – Oh well, rather that than the Vodka. We found some great Pierogi’s in a place called Polka, by-the-way, if you’re ever visiting. I wanted to try out a little bit more street photography again, while at the same time looking for strong contrast in the shadows around the beautiful old town of Warsaw. Reasonably happy with the results, but not quite there yet. I really like the the planets shot, which was well received on the Urban Street Photography group. Almost 250 likes – yeah! Anyway, as always, I hope you like!

Some shots from our trip just over the border to Austria. An adventure filled weekend of hiking and exploring the neighbouring villages. We even managed to have breakfast in Switzerland, lunch in Germany and dinner in Austria. Oh, and the view from the hotel was absolutely stunning, not to mention extra portions of meat upon request. Heaven! – Speaking of heaven, keep an eye out for our angelic visitor below (wink). Anyway, as always, I hope you like!
