New York City

One week of pure street photography in one of the craziest, full-on, deafening cities in world and I loved every second of it.

This was my first ever week away purely for street photography. I spent six days in total getting to know the island of Manhattan intimately, and walked an average of just under 20km’s per day. I even walked a little too far north one day, to Harlem, where I was quickly told to “Get the bleep out of my Neighbourhood white boy”. Nice.

For those who are not familiar with street photography, the images shown here are all candid, fleeting moments. No photoshop, no posing and never any manipulation of the scene whatsoever. All shots were taken in manual (inc. ISO & Focus) with my D750 and 35mm ƒ/1.4 lens. I had two projects running during the visit. The first was perspective manipulation, which you’ll see worked out quite well. The second was minimalism. Hmm, in hindsight NYC was probably not the best place to start a minimalism project so you won’t see many examples there.

I really do hope you enjoy these images, as I had so much fun making them. Fell free to leave me a comment and let me know what you think. Much love.

    • Mike,

Thanks so much. Yea, it’s something I’ll definitely be doing again. An amazing experience and I’ve absolutely come away a better photographer because of it. Need more holidays! 😉

  6. Rob Dude.. the image with the artwork cut out, the guy you have walking past looks exactly like the artwork on the wall. Shirt and collar too. Even his earphone cable seems to be creating a line around his face mirroring the dotted line around the artwork!! Insane – utterly insane! Chanel poster image. I like how you have framed something classy and expensive being advertised right next to what looks like either someone sleeping rough or lots of cardboard boxes. Great juxtaposition! Also that the man is looking at the posters, ignoring the test.. like he’s not wanting to see the ugly stuff. I could be reading more into this than I should be… but I suppose that is what art is for. Like the story telling in the next image, you can clearly see the artist is recreating her work and the detail is incredible. Haha, Sal needs more customers so he will just pick them up off the street. Fab perspective manipulation. Dude with angel wings! Killer!!! ? funny shot of ‘charge your phone’ with man head blowing off steam while using Phone! Man hiding from you! Funny!!! Umbrella shot, love the colours and lines (and curves) in this one!

  7. Your perspective manipulation is strong in the next few, tiny woman forced to stand on a fire hydrant, woman minding her own business being impaled by Wonder Woman, lady passerby getting kicked in the face by woman hanging from one arm on the wall, woman mere seconds away from being snatched up by an eagle. I see a theme here. Are you taking out some frustration on women? ? also… Band on the run? (Showing my über geekiness now) the tension in the photo of the cigarettes is real and the scratches on the bench really intensify that! Love the lines, colours and shapes in image of the pear shaped bag of balloons with legs. What kind of fruit is that man wearing? Looks like part of the pawpaw family. Okay… man wearing stars and stripes shirt has stars and stripes coming out of his head! Clever… very clever. How the frickety feck do you a) spot these things and b) compose them so well? Your use of chiaroscuro is fab! I would love to experiment with that!

  8. Pickachu has lost his head, behind him the store is called US Polo Assn. Assassin????? Perhaps! Guy with the board.. love the colours and shapes here. Nailed the minimalism in this one. All arrows point to that man who looks puzzled. Hah, guy in yellow hat contemplating a manicure! Lol!! What is that guy doing on that sculpture? A great example of Good idea/ Bad idea *Animaniacs flashback… ask me for more details if you have no clue what I am on about* Oooh… a 6×4 Articulated Peterbilt and trailer. Those American beasts look huge as they don’t have the cab over engine designs we have here. Manouvering that in a city centre like New York can’t be easy. Hahaha All hail Tigger… characters in the background seem horrified at the idea! So man with red shirt on yellow square, you seem high up here, how did you get that perspective? Man in red… LOVE use of lines guiding you to his puzzled face! ?? that guy has one hell of a long blue nose! ? and finally… waking stick design seemlessly linked with road markings! Genius! Not sure I will be sending my first (or even tenth) batch of images your way! #intimidated
